The Inn was first licensed in 1796 and was originally known as the ‘Axe Jazz Club’ as a Beer House with regular Music Nights, and the name was later changed to ‘Axe & Compass’ due to a succession of different owners moving into the area, being attracted to the famously rich soil of Northamptonshire and the ever more affluent agricultural area.
The oldest part of the Inn is boasting an original fireplace with stone work from the nearby quarry, which was carried by horse and cart to build the entire Inn over a time span of six years by local labour, having agreed to be working for ‘kind’ rather than cash, just receiving their daily rations of food for themselves and their families plus two pints per day of a popular ale, brewed by hand on the premises.
Today the Axe & Compass is the favourite Meeting Place for young and old, from near and far, to enjoy excellent home cooked fresh food, a superb Pint and outstanding Drinks from our extensive choice in our cosy Bar, enjoying quality food from our great variety of popular Menus in an ambience of a homely rustic countryside atmosphere with friendly, helpful and accommodating staff, making you feel welcome as soon as you walk onto the premises, and wanting our customers to return again and again to the Axe & Compass, the popular home of Real Ale and Real Food in the heart of Northamptonshire’s beautiful countryside.
